Go Dutch!

The Netherlands, otherwise known as Holland, is a great destination for your exchange. You might think of cheese, tulips and windmills as soon as you hear the name of this little country, but we have much more to offer. During your exchange program in the Netherlands you will stay with a Dutch host family. They will help you to adjust to your new Dutch way of life and learning the Dutch language will be much easier with their help.

So get in touch with the Dutch! YFU the Netherlands has exchange programmes with almost 30 countries worldwide. Please check our international website to see is there is a YFU organisation in your country. They could provide you with more information about your exchange possibilities and they will assist you with all necessary arrangements for going abroad.

The story of YFU

Founded in America in 1951 YFU has over 50 years of experience in sending young people on exchange all over the world. In 1951 Dr. Rachel Andresen was on a trip through Germany. She was shocked by the image German youth had of Americans. She decided to take a group of German teenagers with her to the United States so they could learn about the American culture first hand. This was the beginning of Youth For Understanding, an organization that nowadays sends about 7000 students on exchange every year. This makes YFU one of the oldest and biggest exchange organisations in the world.

YFU is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious organization. Although every country has an office with a professional staff, lots of work is done by volunteers. These volunteers are people who have been on exchange themselves or people who have been YFU host families. They have all experienced what it is like to be on exchange and will help you and your parents before, during and after your exchange to make the most of this opportunity.

YFU the Netherlands was founded in 1958. Since then we have sent approximately 6000 Dutch teenagers on exchange to places all over the world. Each year we also welcome a group of international students to our country, to experience our Dutch culture. An experience that will take you further than our tulips, windmills and cheeses. Go Dutch!
